With its brilliant orange and black plumage, the oriole's arrival is eagerly awaited by backyard birders during each spring migration. It is a magical moment when you hear the very conspicuous and fluent song announcing the arrival of the oriole. All birders are ready to welcome this beautiful bird with oriole feeders bearing assortments of fruit, nectar and oriole food. To the oriole, the oriole feeders look like a grand buffet after a long and hard migration.

You can prepare for the arrival of these gorgeous birds in early spring by placing orange halves on your oriole feeders. The color orange attracts orioles because it is the color of the fruits they have been eating in the tropics all winter. Orioles will also eat cherries, berries, grapes and figs. After seeing a few orioles at your feeders, you can add some grape jelly to your feeder. In late spring or early summer add some nectar to your feeders to keep the orioles coming back for more. Many oriole feeders can accommodate fruit, jelly and nectar.

Like many birds, orioles are territorial and will defend their food source. Having multiple feeders throughout your yard is a great way to attract more birds.

There are a few things to consider when choosing oriole feeders for your backyard. Because of their specific food preferences, oriole food has to be offered in special feeders. When offering fruit, you can use a platform to attach fruit halves of oranges, peaches, and apples or place them on a tree with a nail.

Like hummingbirds, orioles are attracted to nectar. But you will need a special bird feeder for feeding nectar to orioles. A hummingbird feeder is not a good choice since an oriole's beak will not fit into the feeding ports. Fortunately, nectar feeders made for orioles are available.

Your local nature or birding shop probably carries oriole nectar, however it is very easy to make yourself. The basic solution is one part sugar and six pars water. Many commercial oriole nectars have orange food coloring added. The food does not need to be orange as long as the oriole feeder is orange.

The ideal oriole feeder is designed to accommodate jelly, nectar and a slice of fruit. Orioles are particular to grape jelly and orange marmalade. Oriole feeders with these accommodations, store the nectar in the bottom, the jelly on the lid and the fruit slice attached in the middle. Mealworms are another favorite with orioles and are also a good source of protein. You can purchase mealworms for oriole food at any well-stocked bird supply store. The mealworms can be offered in an oriole feeder designed to dispense this delicacy.

Keeping your oriole feeder clean is very important if you want the orioles to return. Small, soft bristle brushes work well for getting into all the corners. It is a good practice to clean it between fillings. Just clean with warm water and rinse.

Setting up a wild bird habitat in your yard will bring nature close to you. And having orioles in your yard will make backyard bird watching even more enjoyable. Once you set up your first oriole bird feeder you will see that one is not enough. Having more feeders will attract more birds, thus providing even more birding fun.

Hummingbirds are fascinating animals and can provide a great deal of entertainment to viewers! Though they are not able to be kept in captivity, if you hang a hummingbird feeder near your home, you can attract the tiny birds. Providing for them and watching them can make them feel like another pet under your care.

Creating the right atmosphere for hummingbirds is very important. Merely hanging a feeder will not be enough to attract the birds. They also require a water source, shelter, and other food sources. Your feeder provides only additional nourishment. Planting flowers that provide nectar will also help attract birds to your feeder.

Hummingbird feeders can be purchased at relatively inexpensive cost. Most feeders consist of a container for the food (a sugar & water mixture), and perches for the birds to stand on while drinking. Using a small feeder, or several small feeders, will work best to attract new hummingbirds to your area.

Food for hummingbird feeders consists of a sugar-water mixture. Use 1 part sugar to 4 parts water. For example, add 4 cups of water to a large pot. Add 1 cup of sugar and bring to a boil. Cover the pot and boil 1 to 2 minutes. Let the mixture cool and add it to the hummingbird feeder.

Adding red food coloring to the sugar water is not necessary. Most hummingbird feeders have a red coloring on them somewhere, or you can also attach a red ribbon to the feeder. There haven't been any research studying the affects of food coloring on hummingbirds, so its affects are not known. Therefore, it's a good idea (to be on the safe side) to not use food coloring, as it isn't necessary to attract hummingbirds.

Store any extra food in a refrigerator for up to two weeks (if it gets cloudy, it's no longer safe for feeders) or freeze to store longer.

Cleaning your hummingbird feeder is simple, and it's important not to use bleach or any harsh cleaners which can contaminate your feeder even after rinsing. Use a mild mixture of white vinegar and water and use a bottle brush, pipe cleaners or small brushes to clean every part of the feeder. Your feeder should be cleaned once per week, and the sugar-water should be replaced if it looks cloudy or moldy.

It's not necessary to hang your feeder all year long, unless you live in warm climates. Hummingbirds migrate south for the winter, and they'll leave northern areas anywhere from July through November. You can help migrating birds by leaving your feeder up for a few weeks after you've seen your last hummingbird of the season. The birds can use the nectar to fuel their trip south. Also, if any birds are injured or ill, they may start their journey south later than other birds, and they can use the nectar provided by your feeder. Your feeder can be put back up in the Spring to anticipate the returning birds.

A few more tips: Hummingbirds can be very territorial and may fight over feeders. If you place more than one feeder, try to place them so they're not within viewing distance of one another. Don't use any pesticides or a petroleum-based product to keep ants and bees away, for they may be hazardous to the birds. And don't worry about feeders if you're away from home for a period of time. Hummingbirds have plenty of other sources of food.

Hummingbirds can make great 'pets' as they visit and revisit feeders outside your home. They provide hours upon hours of entertainment!

There are many benefits to having a bird feeder in your back garden. One of the biggest benefits of a bird feeder is that is does the obvious; It attracts and feeds birds. When birds are attracted to your garden they will not only feed on the seed you put out for them, but they will also feed on the insects in the garden. Lets call it your own "green" insect killer.

This simple DIY Bird Feeder Guide will give you a quick 10 step plan to building your own Bird Feeder in a snap. It is easy to do, so don't panic about having 10 thumbs. Now let's get started.

What do you need for this DIY Bird Feeder Project:

1) 1 Piece of (22mm x 222mm x 300mm) Pine Wood for Base
2) Waterproof Glue
3) Brass Screws and Screwdriver
4) 2 x Pine (9mm x 44mm x 300mm) cover strips
5) 2 x Pine Uprights (+- 350mm Long)
6) 2 x Pine (12mm x 350mm x 300mm) Roof Tops
7) 1 x Pine Peak Bar (32mm x 32mm x 350mm)
7) String for hanging
8) Paint / Varnish
9) Bird Seed

10 Step DIY Part of Building the Bird Feeder

1) Select your Base piece of Pine Wood (22mm x 222mm x 300mm) and, using your waterproof glue and 2 brass screws per side, attach the cover strips (9mm x 44mm x 300mm) on each 300mm side of the Bird Feeder base.

2) Take your 2 uprights (350mm long) and cut one side of each upright into a 45 / 90 / 45 degree arrow head shape.

3) Attached each upright to 222mm side of the base, again using your waterproof glue and 2 screws per side.

4) Measure and cut the 2 roof top sections (12mm x 350mm x 300mm). The one must be trimmed down to the thickness of the wood so that the roof is even when attached. For example in this case the roof is 12mm thick: Take the one side of the roof and trim down by 12 mm. Your 1 roof piece will then be 12mm x 350mm x 300mm and the other 12mm x 338mm x 300mm. Adapt these dimensions as required, depending on the thickness of the wood.

5) Cut the peak bar (32mm x 32mm x 350mm) to fit snugly between the uprights and attached the 2 roof halves using your glue and screws. Use a minimum of 3 brass screws per roof half to ensure it is stable Bird Feeder.

6) Now attached the complete roof assembly to the uprights using the waterproof glue and brass screws and secure.

7) Apply a finish of your choice (paint / varnish etc)

8) Drill a hole through the top of your feeder, in the centre of the roof and attach your rope for hanging.

9) Hang the feeder, in a tree in, a cat free area and fill it with you favourite bird seed.

10) Sit back, relax and enjoy watching the birds flock to your garden.
